USING KEEPVID.COM

*This way is simpler, but will only work for youtube videos

STEP 1) Find the video you wish to capture on youtube

STEP 2) Copy the web address of the youtube video from the address bar

STEP 3) Go to keepvid.com

STEP 4) Paste the youtube web address into the slot they have supplied for a URL at the top of the page

STEP 5) Press DOWNLOAD

STEP 6) It will give you several links for downloading your video. Click on the “mp4″ link.

STEP 7) The video should download onto your computer and you should be able to import it into iMovie for editing.

USING HANDBRAKE

*This way will work for most flash based players online, but you’ll need to download Handbrake

STEP 1) Find a flash based video you want (most streaming video online is flash based)

STEP 2) While the video is playing push either alt/command/A or if you’re on a desktop alt/apple/A. This will bring up a menu that will give you all the download links for all the media on the pages you have open. To make it simpler, you may want to make sure you only have the page open that has your video running when you do this.

STEP 3) Find the file under the heading of the page you’re looking at. It will be the largest file on the menu. Most of the files will probably be in kilobytes(kb), but the file you’re looking for will probably be at least a few megabytes(mb). The file you are looking for will probably have a “.flv” at the end of it. Double click on this file. It should download onto your computer.

STEP 4) Now that you have your flv file on your computer you’ll need to convert it into something you can edit in iMovie. You will need to download the “open source”($$free$$) video conversion program “HandBrake” from http://handbrake.fr/.

STEP 5) After handbrake is installed you’ll need to open it and click on “Source.” Choose the flv file that you’ve just downloaded.

STEP 6) Make sure that under output settings in Handbrake that your format is set for MP4. At this time you can also choose where handbrake sends your file by resetting the “Destination.”

STEP 7) Click on “Start” and hopefully in a few minutes you’ll have an MP4 that you can edit in iMovie

*Please keep in mind that in order to get a raise in your Project #2 (the slideshow project) grade you will need to represent your slideshow during the critique we have during our finals meeting (Tuesday 3/16 at 7pm)

VIDEO ESSAY

In as much detail as possible your assignment is to compose a 2 to 3 minute video essay based on a subject taken out of your everyday life. You may use video, still images, and supplemental audio(I’m speaking of narration more than music). Please remember that this is an exercise in visual story telling. Do not rely too heavily on text or a music track to carry the content of your video. As with previous projects you will need to have a written proposal of at least 5 or 6 sentences posted as a response on the class blog to PROJECT #6 by the beginning of next Tuesday’s class (3/9). Justin and I will be going around and meeting with you individually next class to sign off on your project ideas. PROJECT #6 will be due during our final’s meeting, Tuesday (3/16) at 7:00 pm.

*Please note that I expect your video to be turned in to me as an mov file labeled with your name. The instructions for using iMovie to export your project as as an mov file are on the blog. I will be docking points off your project grade if you give me any other file type.

FOUND OBJECT ANIMATIONS

Using anything in your pockets, out of your book bags, or found here in Seigfred hall you must compose a 30 second to 1 minute in duration animated film. Standard frame rate for animation is 12 frames per second, but you may get away with 10 frames. This means if you make a 30 second animation you’ll need to shoot at least 300 still images. You have the remainder of the class time to organize into groups and shoot your animations. Next class meeting (thursday 2/18) we will be turning your still images into animations at the beginning of class and then we will be taking a look at what you all ended up with in ashort critique.

ANIMATION

Using the technique of stop motion animation you will need to create a 1 to 2 minute animated film. You may do this by drawing/painting, the use of physical objects, the use of landscape, or a combination. Standard frame rate for animation is 12 frames per second, but you may get away with 10. This means if you make a 1.5 minute video it will require up to 1080 still frames taken with your camera. You are encouraged to explore your imagination and environment. As with previous projects you will need to have a written proposal of at least 5 or 6 sentences posted as a response on the class blog to PROJECT #5 by beginning of next Thursday’s class (2/18). Justin and I will be going around and meeting with you individually next class to sign off on your project ideas. PROJECT #5 will be due next Thursday (2/25).

GROUP MONTAGE

(Montage is a technique in film/video editing in which a series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time, and information.)

Using a video camera, or a still camera capable of taking video, your group will need to film a 1 to 2 minute montage piece shot in or around Seigfred hall. The montage should explain(in an instructional manner) how to do an activity related to the day to day practice of moving through the building and/or being a student. The activity must consist of 10 steps and you must illustrate each step with at least three separate shots. As in the other montage project, you may use music, but I encourage you not to. Please be aware that the music you use will be under heavy scrutiny when it comes to the grading of these projects. I will be giving you the remainder of this class period to both brainstorm and shoot your ideas. Please make sure that if you are using one of the mini-DV tape cameras that you give me your tape labeled with the names of your group members before you leave the class room today. Next class period time will be given to each group to import your videos and edit. Some out of class time may be required depending on how far you get with the project next class period. PROJECT #4.5 will be due next tuesday (2/9).
